2013BHNLMagnetTransfertransporting50diameterG2CryostatRingsfromBrookhavenNational Lab to the SmithPointMarina. The ringsare being moved from Brookhaven National Lab BNL in New York to Fermi National Lab in Illinois. Scientists from around the world are planning an experiment on particle physicsbut they have to bring the core of this experimenta complex electromagnet that spans 50 feet in diameter from BNL to Fermilab. The land transport portions on both the New York and Illinois ends of the trip will occur at night in order to minimize traffic delaysand the truck will only travelat most10 miles per hour. In New Yorkthe trip from Brookhaven Lab to Smith Point Marina will only take one nightbut the roadway will be closed to pedestrians during the that time. While most of the machine can be disassembled and brought to Fermilab in trucksthe massive electromagnet must be transported in one piece. A team has devised a plan to make the 3200mile journey that involves loading the ring onto a specially prepared barge and bringing it down the East Coastaround the tip of Florida and up the Mississippi River to Illinois. It will be placed on the barge at the Smith Point Marina in Shirley.
